Getting Started

πŸš€ Getting Started

This guide will help you set up Ledgend and create your first budget.

Create an account

  1. Go to the home page and click Get Started to answer a few quick questions about your situation (optional)
  2. Or go directly to the registration page
  3. Enter your email and create a password
  4. Check your inbox for a verification email and click Verify email address
  5. Log in to your new account

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Create a household

Ledgend organises budgets by household. If you’re budgeting with a partner or family, you can invite them later.

  1. After logging in, you’ll be prompted to create or join a household
  2. Enter your household name (e.g. β€œSmith Family” or β€œMy Budget”)
  3. You’ll be set as the owner and can invite others from Settings

🏦 Connect your bank (optional)

Ledgend supports UK Open Banking for automatic transaction sync.

  1. Go to Accounts in the sidebar
  2. Click Connect bank
  3. Select your bank and authorise the connection
  4. Your accounts and recent transactions will sync automatically

πŸ’° Your first budget

When you finish the onboarding survey (or register with survey answers saved), Ledgend creates a first budget for your household with default category groups (Income, Bills, Everyday, Savings) and adds categories that match what you selected in the survey β€” including optional Income categories based on how you earn (salary, partner income, side work, benefits, and similar), or you can skip that step and add income categories yourself later. Type defaults to Personal and currency to GBP β€” you can add more budgets later from the Budget page if you need different types or currencies.

After the survey you may see a short setting up screen while those categories are created. If it takes longer than usual, use Continue to budget when it appears, or open Budget from the sidebar β€” your answers are already saved, and you can add any missing categories from the budget screen.

If you skipped the survey or registered without preferences, open Budget and use Create your first budget to name your budget and confirm type and currency.

When you add another budget later (New budget in the Budget toolbar), you choose whether to create categories from your saved onboarding preferences (same idea as the questionnaire) or add categories yourself β€” see the multiple budgets doc.

Month-to-month budgeting

  1. Go to Budget in the sidebar
  2. Select a month to budget for
  3. Refine categories and set amounts as needed
  4. Allocate your income to each category (zero-based budgeting)
  5. Track your spending as transactions come in
